The Pow Queen Grants Us The Privilege...

Image
Although the lifts may have stopped spinning it doesn't mean the skiing has stopped... when the Pow Queen graces us it would, for all intents and purposes, be a disservice and disgrace not to yield time to bask in her flowing and sparkling white ropes... Especially on a crystal clear blue bird day in picture perfect snow. Not wanting to piss off the Queen we headed out and up. Most lifts have stopped their spin so now you just have to earn your turns. And as for yesterday... it was well worth it. Excellent skiing in 16" of cold smoke was available yesterday anywhere in the Sierra's above 7500 feet.  Due to the lateness of the season and the sun angle however... shelf life is short so timing was everything. For those of you that made time to make it happen like retired Snow King Dave Hahl... it was well worth it. Sven

Great Ones...

You can check the website, look at lift status, check the webcams and all can look good till you get up to the parking lot and see the lift not spinning or the closed sign up... use of many expletives come at this point typically, but once in awhile it all works in your favor and your in the right place at the right time.  As I came around the corner into the parking lot the truck was buffeted by gusts and visibility was marginal. But... the chair was spinning and the pop fences were going in... things were looking good so far. Despite heavy wind and snow first chair loaded at exactly 8:30 today and all nine people loaded the slow ride to the top, was it windy? Well, all of us were happy that someone had the balls to yell "Bar Down" when a wind gust grabbed our skis and tried like hell to lever us out of the chair. Arrival and we cackled "Have a good one!" into the wind and dumping snow and took off on our independent missions. I and another gentleman took Bonanza

Snowing Heavily: Last Pow Day of the Season

Image
Hey folks now is the time to mobilized if they manage to keep the lifts spinning. Heavy snow this morning outside and the groomers will be sweetness and if pershance it keeps up... could be a great day on the mountain.  Sven

A storm is what you make of it...

Well it was 7" in places where they measure for sure... other places, well, not so much, more like dust on crust with ugly bumps rearing their frozen heads. Definitely had to be a little picky to find the goods but it was possible as evidenced here. Those secret stashes are so nice to find, especially when you can come back and again and again and nest your tracks. Well it looks like we will get a week of January in April which I gotta say is classic Nevada weather. 75 one day, below freezing the next. It appears we are set up for several more little pow dumps this week which, if nothing else, will freshen up the groomers and inject some lighter snow into the hard pack. Hope everyone had fun today on the new snow. Waaaaaaay better than nothing! Sven

A 65 year Curse?

Image
No, not me damn it, at least I hope I'm not the cause, but it is a little suspicious I'll give you that... The National Weather Service just came out with some climate info that is quite cogent if you love skiing and riding on the snow. Glancing at the chart below it's easy to see, with a few exceptions, that we have been continuously losing our snowpack for the last 65 years. All of us that that live up in the high country are quite aware that our blowers more and more sit idle for weeks or even months at a time and we can survive on just one tank or maybe two tanks of gas all winter long. That was rarely the case in the old days. Although we have had some heavy years the last few decades, (2011 and 2017 are good examples) for the most part we have witnessed within our lifetime a decrease in not only snowpack but the length of winter. Where my summer business at 7500 feet used to only open in late May and close in October we are now opening up in April and occasionally in

Mt. Rose Parties Down

Image
Although I was on a Road Trip and missed the Sunset Wine Event as well as the Brewfest (both of which are my favorites) I did catch the Passholder Party and it was a good one. As one looks back on the year it is the extra touches that makes Mt. Rose so special. Mimosa and Champagne at the summit, donuts here and there, maxtrax breakfasts, poker runs and t-shirt giveaways to start the season. These are the things that separate Mt. Rose from every other resort. Now if we could only get back to pond skims or Downhill Dummy's... those two events are really missed! Of course there is always something to beef about but all in all, the extra effort Rose makes helps make us more than just patrons... more like a really large family. Of course Charlie Brown was in his usual form (not a bad guy for a Boarder) and there were lots of freebies thrown out between raffles. The best winner was little Dane Longballa (Mimi's grandson) who won the 6' long ski run sign. That will take up some

Pass Renewal Party Tomorrow!

Image
Lots of goings on lately and I missed my favorite events, The Brewfest and the Sunset Wine event as I was in Idaho... I am sure y'all had some fun without me though! Tomorrow is the Pass Renewal Party at noon on the Rose side deck. This year you have to be present to win prizes so that should make it a lot more fun for everyone. Gotta be scanned before noon tho so stop drinking and go to bed. Ski ya there! Sven
